North Midlands Cross-country League October 12th 2019
Round 1 Markeaton Park
After a wet week in Leicester the sun came out in Derby and a lovely day was made brighter still by the many wonderful performances of our athletes across all the age groups.
Let me start with particular congratulations to Olivia Moore and Lyla Izzet who competed really well in their first runs for Saffron AC. In the under 11 girls Olivia finished 24th and in the under 13s Lyla achieved a really impressive 19th. Well done both. They ran competitively and never slowed their pace throughout the race. It was a real pleasure to watch.
The under 11 team performance was excellent. They were second on the day only 9 points behind the leaders, Mansfield AC. Eleanor Nelson ran strongly to finish an excellent 10th and Luan Power performed brilliantly to win the race!! Her performance was worth special mention as through no fault of her own she went off course (poor course marking and less than proactive marshalling). Luan lost at least 50 metres and went from being clearly in the lead to 6th. Nevertheless, she quickly drove on to re-take the lead and fought valiantly to hold her 10 metre advantage all the way to the line. This was athletics at its best.
In the under 11 boys’ race Sam Lewitt ran a strong 12th and in the under 13 girls, Mya Acharya produced another good performance with 14th. In the under 13 boys Joshua Pegg was 24th and Kai Bolsover 28th. Going up an age group in the under 15 girls Eve Rowley continued her good form with an excellent 5th and McKenzie Smith-Byrne was disappointed with her 27th. But she was under the weather and still turned up to compete and finish the race. Jack Hurst, running in a race well above his age category was 117th in a huge field of Senior Men. All these athletes regularly compete for our club. Their determination and consistent approach are something they should be proud of.
What we saw today from all these athletes epitomised the values that are the foundation of our sport. They deserve our praise and high regard. Well done everyone.
