Leicestershire & Rutland X/C County Championships 2017

The Leicestershire and Rutland County Championships were held at Burbage Common on Saturday 7th January. Considering the amount of rain that fell in the days before the race, the course held up considerably well apart from the obligatory mud patches in the woods and outer field.

There was a great collection of silver and bronze medals won on the day which were both won individually and within the teams in the various age groups.

Emma Richards had a fantastic sprint finish to overhaul Rachel Nealon of Wreak & Soar Valley AC in the U15 girls race to win the silver medal. She was about 50 metres behind coming out of the woods but her determination saw her catch and pass Rachel with seeming ease.

In the U20 women’s race, Caitlin Roper had a super race to finish in second place. Running the same distance as the Senior Women, Caitlin made a great impact from early on in the race to complete the 6k course in 28.38. A bronze medal for Alex West in the same age group was also a fabulous achievement.

In the U13 races bronze was the order of the day when both Elsie Robinson and Lachlan Finch were the first Saffron AC finishers. Both had stunning runs, but Lachlan had been a bit under the weather and he went the wrong way, which meant that he lost time but he rallied to finish in 3rd place.

The U13 boys team won the silver medal with great packing from Ash Butler finishing in 5th place and Samuel Wright finishing in 9th place. The U13 girls team were not to be outdone and brought home the bronze team medal with Izzie Smith (12th place) and Ysa Murdey (20th place) both scoring for the team.

There was a silver team medal for the U17 women’s team where Jordan Waine finished in 4th place, Hannah Ord was in 8th place and Megan Rowley finished in 12th place.
The final team medal, but by no means the least, was the U15 girls team. Following Emma Richards home was Emma Gascoigne, who is on the comeback trail and who stunned herself by finishing in 10th place and Naomi Clarke-Myers whose 11th place sealed the bronze medal for the team.

Congratulations to everyone who ran – it was a fantastic day with fantastic results.
